Bluetec is a collection of technologies that have a clear objective: to reduce emissions of diesel mechanics and their consumption. The operating principle of this technique is based on the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides, by adding ammonia as a reducing agent, and its conversion into molecular nitrogen and water vapor. Being dangerous substance ammonia in commercial vehicles using an aqueous solution of urea, which is odorless and is not toxic. On the SCR technique, this additive is known as AdBlue.

The electronic engine controller sucks AdBlue stored in a separate tank and injects the precise amount in the flow of hot exhaust gases, which is hydrolyzed to form ammonia. The consumption of AdBlue in Bluetec engine 4 is 4% of diesel demand. In the Bluetec 5 the requirement of AdBlue will be 6%.

It is therefore necessary to use diesel with low sulfur content. The engineers from Mercedes Benz, the ideal concentration would be 15 parts per million (ppm), ie 33 per cent less than that used in the U.S.. In Europe, however, since this technology can be commercialized as diesel for our continent does offer this feature.

Diesel engines that incorporate this technology amply fulfilled all the requirements of the Rules on Emissions EURO 4 and EURO 5 (entering into force in 2009), which compared with diesel Euro 3 compliant, reduced by 80% gaseous emissions also decrease consumption.

This technology is emerging as an environmental and economic solution for the inland transport of goods by road. The DaimlerChrysler group presented several of their vehicles in Detroit with this technology. In fact, in the living American has seen a Mercedes E320 Bluetec, a Vision GL 320 BLUETEC, a GL-Class with Bluetec system and a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
